According to one embodiment, an exemplary method for determining quality of a description includes posing a classification task concerning at least one audiovisual object to a descriptive method that is used to create the description, generating a set of probabilities from a result of the classification task, and measuring an entropy of the result using the set of probabilities.
A method and apparatus for encoding knowledge using a multimedia network. A multimedia network represents semantic concepts and their relations using multimedia content. A multimedia network associates words and multimedia content with the semantic concepts in order to illustrate and exemplify the semantic concepts as well as describe lexical, semantic, and perceptual relations. The multimedia network can be searched, browsed, or summarized for purposes of information discovery. The multimedia network can also be used for personalizing multimedia content or for querying a multimedia information repository by expanding a query to include related concepts encoded in a Multimedia network.
A method, apparatus, and computer program product for determining and assessing information for collection from information sources for a desired level of decision accuracy are presented. Operations include: receiving a partial set of information; performing a minimax entropy-based test to determine a source with useful information; performing a mutual information or a conditional entropy-based test check minimax test validity. With an invalid result, the information source is excluded from further consideration and the minimax test is repeated; with a valid result, a cost/benefit analysis is determines whether to gather the information. If the cost/benefit analysis succeeds, the information is gathered. Otherwise, the information source is excluded and the minimax test is performed again. A consistency check ensures validity of the information prior to restarting the process. Thus, the set of information is iteratively augmented until there is no information to add or until adding information would be cost-prohibitive.
