A handguard system for use on a rifle having a barrel attached to a receiver by a barrel nut, including an adapter ring and a tubular handguard. The adapter ring is receivable about a barrel nut and changeable between a rotatable configuration where it is rotatably about the barrel nut, and a fixed configuration wherein it is fixed to the barrel nut. The tubular handguard is receivable about a barrel and has an end received about the adapter ring with only the end of the tubular handguard fixedly secured to the adapter ring.
Existing floating handguards have the problem of adding size and weight to M16 style gas operated rifles because these tubular handguards attach to a relatively large diametral surface which lies outward of a firearm operating member or gas tube. Existing handguards are mounted thus so that the handguard inside surface will mechanically clear the gas tube. The present invention solves this problem by providing a handguard system integrated to a firearm, the system having a one-piece extended barrel nut with a smaller diameter outer surface configured to lie inward of the gas tube, between the gas tube and the barrel. A one-piece generally tubular handguard has an outer surface with a longitudinal rib and an inner surface with an inner diameter and a groove which is aligned with the rib. The handguard inner diameter engages the barrel nut outer surface and the groove provides clearance for the gas tube. The rib is configured to maintain the rigidity of the handguard adjacent the groove.
A modular receiver system for firearms comprising a barrel and receiver assembly providing a quick changeover coupling means for connecting the barrel to the receiver, wherein the coupling means comprises a barrel retaining bushing and a pair of opposed cam surfaces on the receiver for hinged engagement of the cam surfaces against the barrel, and wherein the modular receiver system further comprises a rail system for mounting ancillary firearms equipments.
A casing for firearms, comprising a metal sleeve (15) on which is stably applied, through attachment means, a barrel (12), an inner element (14) made from polymeric material for the anchoring of said sleeve (15) and an outer shell (13) made from polymeric material, is realised through successive overmouldings in sequence of the inner element (14) on the sleeve (15) to form a sleeve--inner element group (11) and then of the shell (13) on the group (11) to form the casing (10).

The lower receiver assembly has a fire control assembly. The upper receiver assembly has a barrel and a hand guard. The hand guard has a venting features for allowing cooling air to pass therethrough. The hand guard has a heat shield mounted therein. The hand guard has at least one peripheral device mounting rail. The hand guard has an upper portion and a removable lower portion. The removable lower portion has at least one peripheral device mounting rail. The removable lower portion may be removed and replaced with a different second removable lower portion without the removal of fasteners.
