Abstract
A tilting pad bearing arrangement (10) (FIG. 1(a)) includes an array of bearing pads (15.sub.i) supported on a carrier (16). For each pad, the carrier pad surfaces have cylindrically concave recesses (28.sub.i, 29.sub.i), respectively formed therein with their axis orthogonal to each other. Linkng means (30) has opposite faces of cylindrically convex form conforming to the recesses to make sliding contact therewith, load is transmitted by way of an area, rather than line or point contact, reducing stress on components, while avoiding the high levels of friction associated with spherical seating of similar curvature and being cheaper to manufacture. The linking means may be manufactured from an assembly of plano-convex parts and shims to define thickness.
