Abstract
An application server executes voice-enabled web applications by runtime execution of extensible markup language (XML) documents that define the voice-enabled web application to be executed. The application server includes a hypertext markup language (HTML) conversion module configured for translating information present during runtime execution of an XML document into an HTML document. The system converts the XML document into an HTML document in a manner that is reversible, where all the information from the original XML document is preserved such that the HTML document can be converted back to the original XML document. In addition, the system supplies HTML-compliant formatting information to specifically identify formatting specifications for XML tags having implied formatting characteristics during runtime execution of the XML document. Moreover, the system generates HTML-compliant reference tags for each XML tag that refers to another XML object, based on the context of the XML tag during the runtime execution of the XML document. Hence, the generated HTML document includes all information used during runtime execution of the XML document, enabling the use of web analysis tools to analyze XML-defined applications by analyzing the HTML document for the structure of the XML document relative to other XML documents used to define the XML-defined application.

A method and system are provided for using icons to show the validity of markup language elements applicable to a computer-generated document. A user of a computer-generated document such as a word processing document attaches a schema to the document setting out the rules and procedures with which the document may be annotated with markup language elements for structuring portions of the document. According to one aspect of the invention, the user attaches an Extensible Markup Language (XML) schema to the document for setting the data types, data structures and XML elements rules for the document so that the user may annotate the document with XML structure. When the user begins to annotate the document with a desired markup language structure, such as XML structure, an application pane is displayed to the user to provide the user with assistance in applying allowable XML elements at allowable locations and in allowable order and number. A series of icons are presented alongside the presented elements in the application pane to indicate the level of validity of a given element based on the editing context and location in the document.

When the user begins to annotate the document with a desired data format structure, such as a markup language like XML, a tree view pane is displayed to the user to provide the user with an outline of the data structure presently applied to the document or to provide the user with an outline of the data structure applied to the document as the user annotates the document with data structure. In the tree view, an indicator is displayed in the location of any unannotated text nodes relative to their sibling data elements. If the user focuses on a given unannotated text node indicator in the tree view, the corresponding text node in the corresponding document is highlighted to the user to show the user the location of the text node that has not been annotated with data structure.

Other documents may receive rendition timing from association with the separate document. An event listener element may be included in the external document that is responsive to events affecting elements in the separate document.
