27A central database is provided on an external device, such as a personal data assistant (PDA), that is used for local phone number translation. A communications link is provided between a mobile telephone and the central database to allow accessing and indexing of the central database. The mobile telephone obtains identification information from a base station upon which the mobile telephone is camped. The communications link is used to extract local phone number translation information from the central database by indexing with the identification information to obtain corresponding local phone number translation information. The mobile telephone then provides local phone number translation using the local phone number translation information.
A method and device are disclosed for accessing an emergency call number in a terminal. A signal sends a first identity to a smart card in the terminal, if access is sought to an emergency number readable by terminals that support calls for types of emergencies. If access is instead or additionally sought to at least one emergency number readable by substantially any terminal compatible with third generation specifications, then a second identity is sent to the smart card. Subsequently, the emergency number or numbers are received from the smart card. This smart card functions in a terminal configured to only send the second identity, and it also functions in a terminal configured to send both identities.
A wireless communication system includes a fixed base transceiver station that includes a fixed base station number and a fixed broadcast control channel (BCCH) allocation list and broadcasts a fixed BCCH covering a first range; and a first base transceiver station that includes a first number and a first BCCH allocation list. When the first base transceiver station moves into the first range, the first number is stored into the fixed BCCH allocation list and the fixed base station number is stored into the first BCCH allocation list.
Apparatus (58), and an associated method, for facilitating delivery of network-specific dialing codes to a mobile node (12). Broadcasts of the network-specific dialing codes are scheduled by a broadcast scheduler 64 embodied at a cell broadcast center (38). Signals containing the codes are broadcast and detected by the mobile node (12), thereby to download the values to the mobile node. And, the downloaded dialing codes are indexed (88) together with the dialing codes normally used by the mobile node (12) to call the corresponding service centers (44). Subsequently, when a call is placed to a service center, the dialing codes are transposed (94), if necessary, to permit the call to a designated service center (44) to be completed.
