Abstract
A system (10) comprises a carrier (1) which is adapted to carry an optical fiber (9) and an optical chip (3) having a circuit element (4). The carrier and the optical chip are provided with co-operable alignment features (13,14) for aligning the carrier with the optical chip so that the optical fiber and the circuit element are optically coupled.

6959488 - Method for retaining a first part against a second part - Owned by Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P. (Houston, TX)

A system and method are disclosed which utilize a retaining mechanism to retain a first part against a second part in a manner that supplements or supplants use of adhesive. A retaining mechanism retains a first part against the surface of a second part, wherein the second part comprises a rib that is spatially separated from and oriented over such surface. The retaining mechanism is arranged tightly between the rib and the first part to impart force against the first part to retain it against the surface of the second part. In one implementation, the retaining mechanism is utilized to secure an illuminator cable against the surface of a lid assembly within a media picker device. For instance, a retaining mechanism may be arranged to fit tightly between a rib of the lid assembly and an illuminator cable to retain such illuminator cable against the surface of the lid assembly.

7537394 - Method for assembling a two substrate parallel optical sub-assembly - Owned by Reflex Photonics Inc. (Montreal, Quebec,CA)

There is provided an optical assembly and a method for assembling components of the optical assembly, the method comprising: providing a structure for guiding light; providing a plurality of optical fibers embedded in a fixed arrangement in the structure, the optical fibers for coupling the light from a coupling surface the structure; abutting a first package against the coupling surface, such that each one of multiple elements comprised in the first package is substantially aligned with each one of a first group of optical fibers in the plurality of optical fibers; and abutting a second package against the coupling surface, adjacent to the first package, and such that: the first and the second package are spaced apart by a gap; and each one of multiple elements comprised in the second package is substantially aligned with each one of a second group of optical fibers in the plurality of optical fibers, the gap providing a tolerance in a position of any one of: each one of the elements in the packages; the packages with respect to each other; and each one of the packages with respect to the structure.
