The present invention provides a flexible abrasive product comprised of an open cell foam backing, a foraminous barrier coating and a shaped foraminous abrasive coating. The flexible abrasive article of the invention is made by applying a curable barrier coating over an open cell foam backing, curing the curable barrier coating to provide a foraminous barrier coating having openings therethrough corresponding to openings in the open cell foam, applying a coating composition comprising a curable binder and abrasive particles over the foraminous barrier coating, imparting a textured surface to the coating composition with a production tool which has a textured surface which is the inverse of the textured surface of the abrasive coating and to which production tool textured surface any coating composition coated over an opening of the first major surface may adhere, at least partially curing the binder, and separating the production tool from the textured surface to provide the shaped foraminous abrasive coating.
RELATED APPLICATION
This is a divisional application of allowed continuation-in-part having U.S. Ser. No. 10/137,134, filed Apr. 30, 2002, which is a continuation-in-part application of U.S. Ser. No. 09/706,033, now abandoned, filed on Nov. 3, 2000 and U.S. Ser. No. 09/850,661, now abandoned, filed on May 7, 2001, each of which is incorporated herein by reference.
A flexible hand-held abrasive article includes a conformable backup pad having opposed major surfaces, a backing layer affixed to one surface of the backup pad, the backing layer containing a plurality of biaxially oriented openings, and abrasive particles arranged on the backing layer, thereby defining an abrasive surface. A method of making such an abrasive article is also disclosed. The abrasive article may also comprise a backing layer containing a plurality of biaxially oriented slits with abrasive particles arranged at least one surface of the backing layer.
A porous abrasive article that allows air and dust particles to pass through. The abrasive article has a screen abrasive and a polymer netting with hooks. The screen abrasive has an abrasive layer comprising a plurality of abrasive particles and at least one binder. The polymer netting cooperates with the screen abrasive to allow the flow of particles through the abrasive article.
A porous abrasive article that allows air and dust particles to pass through. The abrasive article has a screen abrasive and an apertured attachment interface with hooks. The screen abrasive has an abrasive layer comprising a plurality of abrasive particles and at least one binder. The apertured attachment interface cooperates with the screen abrasive to allow the flow of particles through the abrasive article.
An abrasive article with an integral dust collection system. The abrasive article comprises a porous abrasive layer with openings, a first filter media with channels, a second filter media, and an attachment interface layer. The openings of the porous abrasive layer cooperate with the channels to allow the flow of particles from the abrasive surface to the second filter media.
An abrasive article having an apertured coated abrasive member, filter media, and an attachment interface member is formed by an ultrasonic welding process. The abrasive article is useful for abrading a workpiece.
