Novel textile finishing compositions for finishing textile articles are provided via the present invention. The textile finishing compositions disclosed herein comprise a cross-linking agent and a catalytic amount of an esterification agent. The cross-linking agents employed herein are selected from polycarboxylates such as homopolymers of ethylenically-.alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated dicarboxylates, copolymers of all ethylenically-.alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated dicarboxylates, and copolymers of ethylenically-.alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated dicarboxylates polymerized with vinyl-containing monomers. Also provided via the present invention are methods for applying the aforementioned finishing compositions to textile articles.

A compound comprising Formula I, or a mixture thereof, ##STR00001## wherein Y is a bond or C.sub.mH.sub.2m-p(OA).sub.p wherein m is 0 to 4, and p is 0 or 1, X' is X or H, X is CH.sub.2CH.sub.2OA, CH(CH.sub.2OA).sub.2, C(CH.sub.2OA).sub.3, or X and X' combine to form (CH.sub.2CH.sub.2).sub.2NCH.sub.2CH.sub.2OA or (CH.sub.2CH.sub.2).sub.2O, provided that when X and X' combine to form (CH.sub.2CH.sub.2).sub.2O then Y is CH.sub.2CH(OA)CH.sub.2, A is CF.sub.2CFHO--R.sub.f or H, R.sub.f is C.sub.nF.sub.2n+1 wherein n is an integer of 1 to about 6, M is a cation having a charge equal to a, and a is a positive integer equal to 1 or 2, provided that at least one of X, X', or Y contains A equal to CF2CFHO--R.sub.f, and its use in lowering surface tension and imparting improved surface effects.
