A system for detecting picture freeze within a video signal wherein a video signal processing portion for connection to a video signal source comprising digital video luma samples and digital video clock and timing signals separately detects motion across the vertical axis of the video picture and across the horizontal axis of the video picture and wherein a frozen picture indicating portion connected to the output of the video signal processing portion determines the number of motionless video picture frames occurring since the last video picture frame in which motion was detected to indicate picture freeze when the number of motionless video picture frames reaches a predetermined value. A noise reduction threshold signal is applied to the video signal processing portion to distinguish motion from background noise in a video signal.

In a monitoring method and image processing apparatus for monitoring electronic transmission of an image, an image detector supplies an input image to a processing circuit that caches it in an image storage. The cached image, or an image derived therefrom, is forwarded as an output image to a viewing device, which outputs the image to a viewer. To monitor the image transfer, an insertion circuit upstream from the processing circuit inserts a dynamic input test signal into the input image. A test circuit downstream from the processing circuit tests whether the output image contains a dynamic output test signal corresponding with the input test signal. Given the absence of the dynamic output test signal, alarm notification is provided to the viewer.
Methods and an apparatus for monitoring compressed bitstreams are disclosed. The disclosed methods and apparatus receive an encoded signal including encoded video frames and determine if video represented by the encoded video frames is frozen or blacked out based on a comparison of sizes of the encoded frames.
