A method for encoding an audio signal, including providing a masking function, representative of psychoacoustic masking; setting a quality value for data of the encoded signal, adjusting the masking function dependent upon the quality value; and allocating bits for quantization of the encoded signal based on the incremental masking function.

Sample-count feedback from bus functional models and a binary convergence algorithm are to generate optimal sampling values for an accelerator, or hardware assisted simulator. The simulator includes a bus functional model and a driver program. A software readable register maintains a count of a number of samples provided the simulator in execution of a transaction on the bus functional model. For each supported bus functional model, a sample count retrieved from the bus functional model and a last sampling value given the hardware assisted simulator is maintained, and a binary convergence algorithm applied to generate sampling values based on the last sampling value given to the hardware assisted simulator and the last actual sampling value used by a given bus functional model for a transaction.
The time needed to encode an input audio stream is reduced by dividing the stream into two or more overlapping segments of audio information blocks, applying an encoding process to each segment to generate encoded segments in parallel, and appending the encoded segments to form an encoded output signal. The encoding process is responsive to one or more control parameters. Some of the control parameters, which apply to a given block, are calculated from audio information in one or more previous blocks. The length of the overlap between adjacent segments is chosen such that the differences between control parameter values and corresponding reference values at the end of the overlap interval are small enough to avoid producing audible artifacts in a signal that is obtained by decoding the encoded output signal.
