An example process for controlling access to a data storage device in a distributed information handling system includes the operation of receiving, at the storage device, a login request from a host. In response to the login request, the storage device may determine whether a host access table in the storage device includes an identifier for the host. If the host access table includes an identifier for the host, the storage device may allow the host to use the storage device. However, if the host access table does not include an identifier for the host, the storage device may prevent the host from using the storage device. Additional or alternative operations may include adding identifiers for specified hosts and a list of corresponding logical storage units to a mapping table. The data storage device may then deny access to hosts without identifiers in the mapping table.
A method, apparatus and computer program for implementing a storage management system for limiting management operation of a storage network element by determining whether the storage network element is related to a host computer and determining whether the management operation is restricted based on the host computer and the time at which the management operation is to be conducted. The invention is set forth in a system including a network, a plurality of storage network elements connected to the network, and the storage management system, connected to the network, for controlling storage management operation of the storage network elements in response to operation requests from users of the storage management system. Each of the storage network elements is related to at least one of a plurality of host computers and information of these relations is used to determine whether a management operation can be conducted on the storage network element.
A system and method for enhancing read performance of at least one storage array using a spare storage array of coupled spare drives, wherein the at least one storage array includes coupled drives configured to store data according to a redundant storage methodology. Data is copied from at least one logical disk of data from the at least one storage array onto the spare storage array and read from the least busy array of the at least one storage array or the spare storage array.
A system and method for optimizing lun masking of a storage appliance is provided. Upon login, an initiator data structure containing a lun map is created and associated with each initiator connected to the storage system. When an initiator sends a message directed to a lun associated with the storage system, the storage system maps the lun sent by the initiator to a physical lun associated with the storage system using the lun map. If the lun map contains an appropriate entry, then the lun has been successfully exported and/or masked to the given initiator.
