The present invention relates to a method and program product for facilitating the maintenance of current bookmarks and preventing the loss of information associated with a bookmark. In one aspect, the invention bookmarks a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) associated with one or more HTML documents at a user's request and creates a database table containing each bookmarked URL. The source code of the bookmarked URL is scanned for embedded links which are stored in the table according to the related bookmarked URL. To ensure that the bookmarks are current, a periodic verification of the status of a bookmarked URL is performed. A change in the location or/and contents of the one or more bookmarked HTML documents results in one or more actions to prevent the loss of data to the user. In one embodiment, the database table is refreshed to reflect any changes to the content of the HTML documents. In another embodiment, where a bookmarked HTML document has been moved to a new URL, the table is updated with a forwarding URL, i.e., the original URL is replaced with the new URL. Where a forwarding URL is not available, a backup document containing the stored embedded links related to the original URL is created.

Service links corresponding to services provided by remote service providers are received. These links may be from a short-range wireless communications network. A previously stored remote service link may be replaced with the received remote service link when a maximum number of stored service links is reached. Also, the received remote service link may replace an earlier stored service link when a identifier corresponding to the received remote service link is the same as an identifier corresponding to the earlier stored remote service link. Representations of remote service links may be displayed, for example, in the form of graphical icons.
A system and method of performing device detection and service discovery in a mobile ad hoc communications network, each network node storing a local application directory. One of the network nodes is selected to be a directory server node that stores a combined application directory. The directory server node sends an inquiry message to a listening node when the listening node enters the coverage area of the directory server node. The listening node sends a notification message to the directory server node that includes the local application directory stored in the listening node. The directory server node compares the received local application directory to the combined application directory and updates the combined application directory accordingly. The directory server node sends an update message to each network node by sending an update portion of the combined application directory. Each network node updates the local application directories accordingly.
The invention is a method for Web authors to include a redirection tag in an HTML data object tag that redirects an application program to an alternative source file that stores underlying data associated with an HTML data object that a user has selected to import into the application program. Typically, HTML data objects in Web page are stored in HTML format. However, when a user selects an HTML object to import, they generally expect to import the data in the format that it was originally created in, such as XML. The redirection tag "redirects" the application program to an alternative source file where the underlying data is stored in a rich format, such as XML. The application program then imports the underlying data of the HTML data object from the alternative source file.
