Disclosed is a method, system, and program for query processing. Metadata for a facts metadata object and one or more dimension metadata objects that are associated with the facts metadata object is stored. A view with columns for one or more measures in the facts metadata object and one or more attributes in the one or more dimension metadata objects is constructed. Additional metadata that describes roles of columns in the fact and dimension metadata objects is generated. Also disclosed is a computer-readable medium for storing data for access by a program. A data structure stored in the computer-readable medium includes data for use by the program. The data includes a cube model metadata object that includes a facts metadata object, one or more dimension metadata objects, and one or more join metadata objects that describe how one or more tables in the facts metadata object and one or more tables in the one or more dimension metadata objects are joined. The data also includes a cube metadata object that represents a subset of the cube model metadata object and comprises a view with columns for one or more measures of one of the facts metadata objects and one or more attributes of one or more of the dimension metadata objects and a document that describes roles of columns in the facts metadata object and the one or more dimension metadata objects.
Methods and apparatus for improving data warehouse performance are disclosed. An example method to format data received from a data warehouse includes receiving an analysis instruction, retrieving data from the data warehouse based on the analysis instruction, and associating a mapping file with a fact table, the mapping file stored in a first hierarchical directory file path.
Techniques are described for automatically selecting default dimensions of multidimensional data for publication. A computer-implemented system, for example, includes a data store having multidimensional data. The multidimensional data includes one or more data cubes having dimensions. The system further includes a publish module for accessing the data store and publishing the multidimensional data associated with the data cubes. The publish module selects a default dimension for publication for each of the data cubes based on attributes of the dimensions.
Techniques are described for automatically generating a reporting model based on a relational database storing multidimensional data in accordance with a relational database schema. A model generator may, for example, produce a base reporting model from the database schema, and subsequently generate a user reporting model by importing the base reporting model. The model generator updates the user reporting model in response to modifications requested by a user, and maintains an activity log to record the modifications. The model generator regenerates the base reporting model and the user reporting model in the event the database schema changes, and reapplies the modifications from the activity log to the user reporting model to automatically update the user reporting model. The database schema may be a relational star schema as described herein.
Techniques are described for publishing multidimensional data from an enterprise software system. A relational database schema is automatically created for storing the multidimensional data. The database schema may be a relational star schema as described herein. The techniques may include processes for automatically producing the database schema based on the organization of the multidimensional data cube, and for populating the database schema with data from the data cube. The database schema may be used for reporting the multidimensional enterprise data, or may serve as a staging area to move the enterprise data toward a data warehouse within an enterprise software system. The reporting schema may support heterogeneous data types and heterogeneous formats. The reporting schema may also contain metadata that describes the schema, allowing for enhanced interpretation of the database schema. Also described is a process for automatically generating a reporting model from the database schema.
