Provided are new two-photon absorbing chromophores of the formula: ##STR00001## wherein R is an alkyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms and Q is OH, OMe, propargyloxy-(O--CH.sub.2--C.ident.CH), methylpropargyloxy-(O--CH.sub.2--C.ident.C--CH.sub.3), allyloxy-(O--CH.sub.2--C.dbd.CH.sub.2),1-methyl-allyloxy(O--CH.sub.2--CH.- dbd.CHCH.sub.3) and 3-methyl-allyloxy (O--CH(CH.sub.3)--CH.dbd.CH.sub.2).
