Abstract
A cutting matrix has a top surface, a first cavity for tightening the cutting matrix in a cutting tool, and a cutting edge for cutting by stock removal. A second tightening cavity is arranged coaxially with respect to the first cavity. The first cavity is deeper than the second, and both are below the upper surface of the cutting matrix.

An integral insert clamping mechanism for transferring clamping forces away from the screw hole of the insert to relieve stress at the screw hole by way of protrusions located on the bottom surface of the clamp plate. The clamping mechanism functions by a clamp plate being seated within an indentation on the top surface of the insert and a screw inserted into screw holes of the clamp plate and the insert and then threadably engaged with a threaded bore of a milling cutter. The top surfaces of the screw, the insert and the clamp plate being substantially coplanar. In an alternative embodiment, the clamp plate having a chip breaker.
