Compounds of formula (I) ##STR00001## are novel VR1 antagonists that are useful in treating pain, inflammatory thermal hyperalgesia, urinary incontinence and bladder overactivity, wherein X.sub.1, X.sub.2, X.sub.3, X.sub.4, X.sub.5, R.sub.5, R.sub.6, R.sub.7, R.sub.8a, R.sub.8b, R.sub.9, Z.sub.1, Z.sub.2, and L are defined in the description.
This is a divisional of U.S. patent application Ser. No. 10/364,210, filed Feb. 11, 2003, now U.S. Pat. No. 7,074,805, incorporated herein by reference, and which claims priority from U.S. Provisional Application Ser. No. 60/358,220 filed on Feb. 20, 2002.
