The present invention relates to phosphinic acid derivatives of formula I ##STR00001## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are described hereinabove. These compounds can be used in the treatment or prevention of a disease related to the inhibition of .beta.-secretase, inter alia for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.
