What is claimed is:

1. A near-field optical head comprising: a main surface that confronts a recording medium during use of the near-field optical head; a sharpened tip disposed on the main surface and having an optical aperture at a front end thereof; an opaque film covering the sharpened tip and having a plastically deformed portion in the vicinity of the optical aperture, the front end of the sharpened tip projecting from the plastically deformed portion of the opaque film; at least one stopper disposed in the vicinity of the sharpened tip and having a height substantially equal to a height of the sharpened tip; and at least one air-bearing surface disposed on the main surface.

2. A near-field optical head according to claim 1; wherein the sharpened tip and the stopper are made of the same material.

3. A near-field optical head according to claim 1; wherein the stopper is disposed relative to the sharpened tip so that the stopper is subjected to a lift force upon relative movement between the stopper and the recording medium to thereby maintain a constant distance between the optical aperture of the sharpened tip and the recording medium.

4. An information recording/reading apparatus for recording/reading information utilizing near-field light, the information recording/reading apparatus comprising: a recording medium; a near-field optical head comprised of a main surface confronting the recording medium, a sharpened tip having an optical aperture at a front end thereof confronting the recording medium for transmitting light having a preselected wavelength, and an opaque film covering the sharpened tip and having a plastically deformed portion in the vicinity of the optical aperture so that the front end of the sharpened tip projects from the plastically deformed portion; aperture formation controlling means disposed in the vicinity of the sharpened tip of the near-field optical head for controlling formation of the optical aperture at the front end of the sharpened tip; and a light guiding structure for guiding luminous flux from a light source to the optical aperture of the sharpened tip of the near-field optical head to generate near-field light for recording/reading information to and from the recording medium.

5. An information recording/reading apparatus according to claim 4; further comprising distance-control means for controlling a distance between the near-field optical head and the recording medium.

6. An information recording/reading apparatus according to claim 5; wherein the distance-control means includes means for protecting the optical aperture of the near-field optical head.

7. An information recording/reading apparatus according to claim 5; wherein the distance-control means comprises a piezoelectric actuator.

8. An information recording/reading apparatus according to claim 5; wherein the aperture formation controlling means comprises the distance-control means.

9. An information recording/reading apparatus according to claim 4; wherein the sharpened tip is conical-shaped.

10. An information recording/reading apparatus according to claim 4; wherein the sharpened tip is pyramidal-shaped.

11. An information recording/reading apparatus according to claim 4; wherein the aperture formation controlling means comprises at least one stopper disposed on the main surface and having a height substantially equal to a height of the sharpened tip.

12. An information recording/reading apparatus according to claim 11; wherein the near-field optical head has at least one air-bearing surface disposed on the main surface.

13. An information recording/reading apparatus according to claim 12; wherein the at least one air-bearing surface comprises a surface of the at least one stopper.

14. An information recording/reading apparatus according to claim 12; wherein the at least one air-bearing surface of the near-field optical head comprises a plurality of air-bearing surfaces disposed on the main surface.

15. An information recording/reading apparatus according to claim 11; wherein the at least one stopper comprises a plurality of stoppers disposed in the vicinity of the sharpened tip, each of the stoppers having a height substantially equal to the height of the sharpened tip.

16. A near-field optical head comprising: a sharpened tip having an optical aperture at a front end thereof; an opaque film covering the sharpened tip and having a plastically deformed portion in the vicinity of the optical aperture, the front end of the sharpened tip projecting from the plastically deformed portion of the opaque film; a plurality of stoppers disposed in the vicinity of the sharpened tip for controlling formation of the optical aperture at the front end of the tip; and a plurality of air-bearing surfaces disposed so as to confront a recording medium during use of the near-field optical head for allowing the near-field optical head to fly over the recording medium during use of the near-field optical head.

17. A near-field optical head according to claim 16; wherein each of the stoppers has a height substantially equal to the height of the sharpened tip.

18. A near-field optical head according to claim 16; wherein the sharpened tip and each of the stoppers are made of the same material.

19. A near-field optical head according to claim 16; wherein the stopper is disposed relative to the sharpened tip so that the stopper is subjected to a lift force upon relative movement between the stopper and the recording medium during use of the near-field optical head to thereby maintain a constant distance between the optical aperture of the sharpened tip and the recording medium.
