Abstract
A muffler for marine engines comprising a shell or body composed of two half sections integrally joined to produce an outer chamber having an inlet and an outlet port, an inner chamber in the shell having a perforated or foraminous cone at one end of said inner chamber, said cone establishing communication between the chambers, the inner chamber having laterally extending ports at its end remote from the cone, said ports communicating with the outer chamber and with the outlet of said outer chamber. The halves of the outer shell can be fitted together in numerous ways to thereby align or disalign the inlet and outlet ports of the shell.

3811531 - SILENCER - Owned by Safety Vehicles Development AB (Stocksund,SW)

A muffler or silencer, preferably for motor vehicles, adapted to be mounted to the exhaust pipe of an exhaust gas system. The silencer comprises a casing having arranged therein a number of means arranged to impede the passage of a major part of the gas flow and to re-direct said part gas flow rearwardly. Gas through-flow openings are provided at alternate ends of the gas flow re-directing means, between said ends and the casing walls. The arrangement of the through-flow openings is such as to force the gas flow to follow a zig-zag path, and baffle means may be arranged, if desired. The whole device may be made from a heat resistant plastics material.

3987868 - Silencing device for internal combustion engines

A silencing device or muffler for internal combustion engines comprises a hollow body including an outer shell having an inlet port and an outlet port. At least one apertured conical element or frusto-conical cup is arranged in the shell to form at least one inner expansion chamber therein. The conical element includes a completely solid wall structure that is impermeable to exhaust gas and has at least one opening along only the bottom portion thereof to cause all of the exhaust gases to move therethrough. A further feature includes a baffle plate disposed transversely of the interior of the shell and in operative relationship to the conical elements. The plate is shaped or apertured to permit a flow of exhaust gas around or through it when the gas passes into the shell and through the opening in said conical element.

5020631 - Modular silencer - Owned by Devil, societe anonyme (Bonneville,FR)

A silencer is disclosed comprising an external case (1) formed by assembling together a first case element (14) and a second case element (15) each formed of a continuous wall comprising a tubular axial portion and an end radial portion (3, 4). The elements (14, 15) are obtained by deep drawing. They are assembled axially together by peripheral welding on the intermediate peripheral connecting zone (30) formed by their two edges (17, 32) applied against each other and bearing on an inner support piece (13).

6604604 - Catalytic muffler and method - Owned by Fleetguard, Inc. (Nashville, TN)

A catalytic muffler includes a housing having an inlet, an outlet, and a plurality of catalyst coated serially stacked perforated cups through which exhaust flows and is acoustically attenuated and catalyzed.

5259797 - Marine engine exhaust system and method - Owned by Marine Muffler Corporation (Apopka, FL) [*] Notice:The portion of the term of this patent subsequent to September 15, 2009 has been disclaimed.

A marine engine exhaust system and method utilizes first and second enclosed, generally tubular chambers having generally parallel lengthwise dimensions and internal intermediate exhaust passageways spaced along the lengthwise dimension of the second chamber for circulating the exhaust gases through the first chamber, laterally through the intermediate exhaust passageway into the second chamber, along the lengthwise dimension of the second chamber and thence out of an outlet exhaust passageway which passes through the second chamber wall. An outer portion of the second chamber is integrally formed with an outer portion of the first chamber to enhance structural integrity.
