Abstract
A safety device for lowering persons or loads from high elevations, such device featuring a revolving cylinder which is selectively coupled to a rope drum or wheel when the velocity of the drum is sufficiently great. The cylinder is mounted on a single shaft and encloses a centrally located or middle piston which is pinned to the cylinder and serves as a partition to divide the inner chamber into two portions. The middle piston is movable rotationally with the cylinder but is immovable axially. Two other pistons within the respective chamber portions are fixed to the immovable shaft but they are movable axially. All of the pistons are propeller shaped; that is, they are contoured to have high and low points; and the inner end walls of the cylinder are correspondingly contoured or shaped.

4463830 - Reel for a life-line - Owned by Machinefabriek Geurtsen Deventer B.V. (Deventer,NL)

A reel for a life-line comprising a frame, a winding member rotatably journalled in said frame and damping means connected on the one hand with the frame and on the other hand with the winding member for counteracting the rotation of the winding member, said damping means comprising at least two piston pumps axially arranged side by side in a pump housing and cam discs, the cylinder chambers of said piston pumps communicating with one another by an axial channel forming a restriction and the pistons being in contact with the surfaces of the cam discs relatively off-set by half a cam interval, said winding member extending around the damping means, said cam discs being formed by rings and each piston pump being radially arranged inside a ring, while the axial channel is in line with a bore extending from a head face of the pump housing.

4113237 - Cable tension control - Owned by D. G. Beyer, Inc. (Milwaukee, WI)

A cable pay-out drive is positioned between the winch drum and a clam shell supported by the cable. To lower the clam shell, the pay-out drive pulls cable from the drum under constant tension. To raise the clam shell, the winch drum retrieves cable, again with the cable under constant tension between the drum and pay-out drive. One sheave of the pay-out drive is mounted for movement in response to the load of the clam shell on the cable and that sheave is associated with a load cell which translates the cable load into a gauge reading so that the magnitude of the load being raised is continuously monitored from within the crane cab.

4173332 - Rotary speed limiter device

A rotary speed limiter device particularly useful as a fire escape device. The device has a rotary speed limiter member mounted on a shaft to slide axially on the shaft and to rotate with it. Means, the speed of which is to be controlled, rotates the shaft. As the shaft is rotated, means applies a braking force on the speed limiter member, causing it to compress air in a surrounding support body and to move axially on the shaft, to limit the speed of the shaft rotating means.

4416351 - Reel for a life-line - Owned by Machinefabriek Geurtsen Deventer B.V. (Deventer,NL)

The invention relates to a reel for a life-line comprising a frame, a winding member journalled in said frame so as to be rotatable about a rotary axis, damping means connected on the one hand with the frame and on the other hand with the winding member and counteracting the rotation of the winding member, said damping means comprising at least one cam member and a plurality of piston pumps rotatably co-operating herewith along a relative path of movement with respect to one another and each having a cylinder and a piston displaceable therein and being in contact with the cam member, while of each pair of pumps, whose pistons are moved in opposite senses by the cam member, the cylinders communicate with one another through a channel having a restriction. In order to provide a reel capable of providing powerful damping, which is nevertheless compact, the reel comprises one set of pumps having a plurality of pump pairs which co-operate with the cam member along one and the same relative path of movement and which communicate each with a common channel portion through a restriction.

4489919 - Safety winch with disengageable drive

A winch has a drum arranged on a rotatable shaft, a rope member connected with the drum and connectable with a load, a speed-changing transmission, a drive element arranged to drive at least one member of the transmission, and a clutch arranged to connect the shaft with the transmission to provide rotation of the drum with one speed and disconnect the shaft from the transmission to provide rotation of the drum with a different speed.
