Abstract
A self-penetrating fastener assembly for anchoring in wallboard has a pointed anchor member and a threaded fastener. The anchor member has a longitudinal recess formed by semicylindrical segments which intersects an aperture that extends through the anchor. The fastener is aligned within the recess which engages the threads of the fastener, the head thereof protruding beyond the end of the anchor and the assembly is hammered into the wallboard. When the anchor clears the wallboard, the fastener is threadingly advanced into the anchor which, in turn, is drawn up against the back of the wallboard securely attaching an article thereto.

6764261 - Locking device and method for catch basin and manhole covers, and the like

A locking device and method for securing a cover as for a catch basin or manhole in position including two elongate members pivotally connected together end to end so as to be able to articulate. The members are held aligned while being inserted through a cover opening suspended in said opening on a flange on the upper member, the lower member then released to be angled by a spring force to wedge against sidewall and an edge of the cover opening. A bolt extending through the top threaded into a trunnion extending across an intermediate space of the lower member draws the lower member up to create a powerful wedging action to prevent cover removal. The bolt head is recessed into the flange and configured with a special shape engageable only with a special tool to be tamper resistant. A protective plastic cap covers the bolt head and has protrusions sheared off when the cap is removed to provide a tamper indication. A miniature radio transmitter can be installed beneath the cap to transmit an alarm signal when the cap is removed. The locking device is used with a modified manhole cover by installing an adaptor sleeve defining a rectangular opening through which the locking device is inserted, and by connecting an extension arm to the lower member bottom end by use of a shear pin and pivot bolt allowing release of the locking device and cover in the event of an explosion.

4449873 - Fastener for attaching articles to a penetrable surface - Owned by Illinois Tool Works Inc. (Chicago, IL)

A fastener assembly for attaching articles to a penetrable surface such as drywall material found in the interiors of buildings. The assembly is comprised of a fastener, which fastener has a threaded shank with a pointed end and either a head or a second threaded end and an anchor member piercedly captured by the threaded shank of the fastener. The anchor member is held in a position substantially parallel to the axis of the threaded shank with the pointed end extending beyond the anchor member by a retaining means while the assembly is piercing a surface; as the assembly pierces the surface, the retaining means slips from engagement with the anchor member and, as the anchor member passes through the rear side of the surface penetrated, spring means on the anchor member urge the anchor member to a position substantially oblique to the axis of the threaded fastener. Force applied to the assembly in a direction to withdraw the assembly from the surface brings the anchor member in contact with the inner face of the surface penetrated, this binding action of the anchor member against the inner face of the surface penetrated keeps the anchor member stationary while the threaded fastener is threadedly advanced through the anchor member until the fastener is appropriately positioned for attachment of an article to the surface. The assembly is capable of accomplishing its purpose of fastening articles to the penetrated surface even when a wooden member abuts the inner face of the surface without having to withdraw the assembly and apply a different fastener means to accommodate that wooden member.

5054981 - Screw and toggle fastening means

A screw and toggle fastener in which the toggle member is formed from spring steel so as to be flexible but non-expandable. The toggle member is provided with a centrally located aperture to permit the threaded insertion of a screw member. The toggle member has a leading portion with respect to the central aperture which may be provided with a pointed leading edge to facilitate insertion through a member to which it is to be attached. A trailing portion of the toggle member is arcuately deformed out of the plane of the leading portion by an amount which permits pivotal movement of the toggle member with respect to the axis of the screw member so that it forms a bridging contact with the threads of the screw member when the toggle member is at right angles to the screw member after passing through the members being fastened together.

5464311 - Blind bolt for architecture - Owned by Alps Seiko Co., Ltd. (Nagano,JP)

A blind bolt comprising a headed bolt with a male screw at the side opposite its head having an external diameter which can be inserted into through-holes of architecture members to be tightened; a rotating washer made of a cylindrical member having an external diameter which can be inserted into the through-holes of architecture members, and having on both end surfaces slopes in parallel to each other each of which has a longitudinal diameter larger than that of the internal diameter of each of said architecture members; and a nut which is screwed to the male screw. Thus, the blind bolt can be inserted into through-holes of architecture members from one side and also can be nut-tightened from the same one side thereby tightening the architecture members.

5139377 - Toggle type fastener

A fastener which includes a threaded shank and a head. An anchor is pivotally connected to the threaded shank by a dimpled thread and is designed to pivot after the leading edge has cleared the mounting surface.
