A copolymer emulsion comprising (I) a copolymer obtained by copolymerizing (A) a dicyclopentadiene derivative, (B), an .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated monomer having one or more OH groups, (C) an .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated monomer copolymerizable with the components (A) and (B), followed by the reaction of the resulting copolymer with (D) a partial allyl ether of polyhydric alcohol having one or more terminal isocyanate groups, and (II) water can be cross-linked and cured at normal temperatures to give coating films particularly excellent in hardness, water resistance, corrosion resistance and solvent resistance.
Aqueous vinyl ester/ethylene copolymer emulsions possessing good dry pick and wet pick strengths in paper coating compositions comprise a vinyl ester/ethylene copolymer colloidally dispersed in an aqueous medium, the copolymer consisting essentially of (a) a vinyl ester of a C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkanoic acid, (b) about 0.5 to 15 wt % ethylene, (c) about 0.1 to 10 wt % of an ethylenically unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acid or half ester thereof, (d) about 0.05 to 10 wt % of a dicyclopentadienyl acrylate, and (e) 0-50 wt % of an alkyl acrylate.

This invention relates to stable aqueous dispersions of film-forming addition polymer. Novel aqueous dispersions comprise polymer which is a copolymer of amphipathic and non-amphipathic monomer. The amphipathic monomer has an HLB value of at least 8, the hydrophilic component thereof is non-ionic, and the lipophilic component has a molecular weight of at least 100, comprises at least one ethylenic double bond but has no acrylyl or methacrylyl structure. The polymer comprises up to 80% by weight of amphipathic monomer. The dispersions are useful as components of such compositions as surface coatings and adhesives.
A class of polymer precursor materials, which, under appropriate conditions, react to form cross-linked polymers, is disclosed. These materials contain a backbone segment, such as polyacrylate, having pendant therefrom mono- or disubstituted olefinic groups, such as vinyl itaconate, having specific polymerization rates. This class of materials, especially when coupled with specifically-defined oxygen-activated catalyst systems, provide paint and plastic compositions which exhibit excellent film formation, strength and durability characteristics.
An improved waterbased coating composition containing about 10-50% by weight of film forming binder and pigment in a pigment to binder weight ratio of about 1/100 to 200/100 dispersed in an aqueous carrier and having a pH of about 7-10; wherein the improvement used in the composition is a acrylourethane pigment dispersing polymer in an amount of about 0.5-10% by weight, based on the weight of the coating composition; the acrylourethane pigment dispersing polymer is composed of hydroxyl and carboxyl functional acrylic polyol having a hydroxyl no. of about 50-170 and an acid no. of about 30-120 and chain extended with an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic diisocyanate in the presence of a monohydric alcohol and the polymer has a weight average molecular weight of about 10,000-40,000 and the carboxyl groups are neutralized with ammonia or an amine.
