Abstract
This invention provides a modular jack receptacle connector (10) which has at least one light pipe (14) for transmitting light signals from a light emitting device receiving area (66) through an output face (76) along the mating face (24) of the modular jack receptacle (10).

A modular jack (1) includes an insulative housing (10), a plurality of contacts (20) received in the housing, a LED (4) and a tab (40). The insulative housing has a bottom wall (10b) defining a first slot (16) and a second slot (18) communicated with the first slot. A post (18a) projects from an interior surface of the second slot. The LED comprises an indicator (32) received in the first slot, and a pair of leads (34) extending from the indicator and received in the second slot. The tab is received in the second slot and engaged with the leads. A through hole (42a) is defined in the tab for downward extension of the post.

A modular jack assembly with an indicator comprises a housing (19) made of an insulative material and consisting of two tiers, each tier having at least one through-hole (15) and at least one opening (18a or 18b) for receiving a mating connector. The modular assembly further comprises at least one light transmission means (11D) for transmitting light, which is provided in the through-hole and has a light receiving member (13) at one end for receiving light from a corresponding light source (6a OR 6b) mounted on a board outside of the modular jack assembly and disposed in a line along a rear wall of the housing and an indicator member at the other end for displaying the light to the outside of the modular jack assembly. The transmission means provided in the through-hole of an upper tier extends upwardly from the light receiving member along the rear wall, bent at right angles into an upper wall of the upper tier and then bent diagonally along the upper wall of the upper tier. The light transmission means provided in the through-hole of a lower tier extends upwardly from the light receiving member along the rear wall and bent at right angles into and through an upper wall of the lower tier.

A connector assembly includes a housing having a plurality of receptacles, including a top receptacle, for receiving a plurality of mating plugs. A light guide is operatively associated with each receptacle and its respective mating plug to signal a circuit condition thereof. Each front end has an indicator to visually indicate the receptacle with which the respective light guide is operatively associated.

When the straight front end section of each light guide unit is forward extended through a corresponding locating plate, the elastic stopper would abut on a rear side of the bridge section, and the slit on the bridge section would engage with the hold-down tab, enabling the light guide element to be flatly assembled to the top surface of the connector case.
