A solid support template for solid phase synthesis of amino group containing compounds is provided that comprises amino-ketone core compounds of the general formula: linked to appropriate insoluble substrates to create solid support templates having the general formula: where L is a multifunctional monomer carrying a first functional group that forms a covalent bond with X and a second functional group comprising an amine and L, R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are selected from the group consisting of alkyl, alkyl-aryl, alkenyl, alkenyl-aryl groups having up to 6 carbon atoms and substituted forms thereof. The amino-ketone templates are useful for the solid phase synthesis of compounds such as the imidazoles, benzodiazepines, pyrazines, and steroid mimics.

The present invention relates to novel templates useful for generating novel compounds and to compounds produced utilizing the templates. The templates comprise quaternary amino acids that may be linked to solid supports. These templates make possible the production of novel classes of chemical compounds through a plurality of chemical reactions. The templates are advantageous for use in drug discovery regimes.
