A surgical laser backstop instrument comprising a rod, a backstop pivotally mounted to one end of the rod, and a backstop adjustment mechanism mounted to the other end of the rod. The backstop is comprised of a non-reflective material. The backstop adjustment mechanism controls the movement of the backstop. The backstop is a flat section of titanium-coated material and is movable between a position longitudinally aligned with the axis of the rod and a position transverse to the axis of the rod. ...

An insert for guiding and orienting a surgical laser peripheral into a calibration device for calibrating the laser's output is disclosed. This insert is affixable to the output end of the laser peripheral. It is configured as a rigid body of flat sheet stock shaped at its lower end to permit insertion into the aperture of a laser calibration device. It has at its midsection a shoulder which limits insertion into said aperture to a predetermined depth. It has, at its upper end, one or more manua...
A manifold connector, sheath connector and housing connector are provided for independently connecting a fiber enclosing sheath and (laser enhanced) fiber optic catheter housing to a transluminal balloon catheter manifold. The housing connector includes a locking plate enclosure, and a planar locking plate contained in the enclosure to reciprocate between open and locking positions, and spring biased into the locking position. The sheath connector includes an elongate cylindrical body attached t...
This invention consists of a range of easily attachable, disposable and sterilizable caps which can be fitted onto the output end of laser therapy heads to prevent the spread of transmissible diseases during laser therapy treatments of humans and animals over a range of laser wavelengths at power levels across the electro-magnetic spectrum while maintaining laser beam intensities of less than one milliwatt per circular area of 7 mm diameter.
The invention relates to a catheter device including an optical fiber whose distal end is disposed within a hollow tube with a sharp or needle shaped distal end, which can penetrate tissue. The distal end of the optical fiber and the hollow tube are configured so as to emit, by refraction (total internal reflection) or reflection from a metal surface, laser energy at an angle of about 80.degree. to about 90.degree. relative to the longitudinal axis of the optical fiber and hollow tube. The hollo...
A surgical probe is disclosed that disperses light sideways from its fore end. A light-dispersive and light-transmissive medium is enclosed within a housing. The medium is preferably divided into sections containing different concentrations of a light-dispersing material within a matrix. The sections are preferably separated by non-dispersive spacers. At the tip end of the probe is preferably a mirror to reflect the light back into the dispersive medium. The mirror may consist of layers with mul...
A method and apparatus for processing a material creates a cavitation nucleus in a portion of the material by focusing optical radiation at the portion of the material and then causing mechanical disruption in another portion of the material adjacent the cavitation nucleus by subjecting the cavitation nucleus to ultrasound waves.
A device is described that can be used by surgeons to provide quick and accurate face-lifting maneuvers that minimize the amount of tissue that has to be removed. The device comprises of a hollow undermining shaft with specially designed tip that can safely separate tissue planes and lyse fibrous tissue. Laser light can be delivered down the shaft to heat and cause tissue contraction. Device can also include a temperature sensor that can be used to control laser power. Optionally the device can ...
A controlled process for thoroughly curing light-activated surgical and dental composites is presented using a hand-held, self-contained, cordless, rechargeable laser instrument. At least one micro laser generates focused single wavelength blue laser light of at most 480 nm, and enhances efficiency and control of curing. The process of use includes switching from stand-by mode to curing mode of operation of the instrument to save time during surgical and dental procedures.
