The device has two holders which are arranged at a distance from one another on the print side of the plate and are to be connected to the body of the vehicle and to which the number plate is attached. In order to connect each holder (2) to the body (10) of the vehicle, two coupling bolts (5) are provided which are located in the fitted state with a flat main part (6) in a bead (4), which is open towards the number plate (1), of the holder (2). The coupling bolts (5) are seated with an essentially Z-shaped locking element (7) in bores (8, 9), which are flush with one another, in the holder (2) and in the body (10) of the vehicle and have laterally protruding locking shoulders (11) on the end of the main component (6) facing away from the locking element (7) in the plane of said main part (6). The said locking shoulders (11) engage in recesses (12) of the holder (2). Each holder (2) has two threaded bores (15) for screwing tight the number plate (1) with screws which provide engagement faces for a screwdriver in the tightening direction only.
