Abstract
Abstract of GB196216 196,216. Hardy, J. J., and Hardy Bros. (Alnwick), Ltd. July 31, 1922. Rods and rod fittings. - A device for attaching a fishing- reel back-plate to a rod-butt comprises an externallythreaded inner ferrule a, which may be longitudinally divided for a part of its length and an internally-threaded outer sleeve b, both of which slide freely along the butt c. The reel backplate d enters a recess in the ferrule a and is gripped between the ferrule and the sleeve. Both ends of the back-plate may be secured by the device described.

Claims
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of our said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, nve declare that-what we claim is:-

1. The herein described means for attaching afishing-reel back-plate to a rod-butt, comprising an externally threaded inner ferrule in combination with.ah internally threaded outer sleeve, both the said elements being freelymounted to slide upon therod-butt.

2.In.a, -fishing-reelattachment as defined in the preceding claiming clause, the combination, with a slitted inner ferrule formed with an external screwthread except as to a portion lying behind the reel back-plate, of an outer sleeve internally screw-threaded asto. the ter- mi portions of its length, whereof one portion engages and grips the reel backplate as the sleeve is screwed home alongthe ferrule, whilst both portions engage with the externally threaded inner ferrule,

3. In anshing reel attachment asdéfi. ned in the-first.-claiming clause, an inner ferrule whereof a portion is engagedbetween'the.rodandoneofthearms of the back-plate, the latter being in turnengaged-within. an : outer sleeve tightened thereon by screwing the outer sleeve upon the inner ferrule.

Description
PROVISIONAL SPECIFICATION.

Improved Means for Attaching Reels to Fishing-rods.

We,ToHN JAMES HARDY, of British nationality, andEARDY BROTHERS (ALN- wiCK), LIMITED, a'British company, all of Alnwick, in the County of

Northumberland, Fishing-rod and Tackle

Manufacturers, do hereby declare the nature of this invention to be as follows:-

This invention relates to reel-attachments of the character described in the

Specification toLettersPatentgrantedto us and dated 16th June,1909, No.

14,137, and consists in certain improvements designed to expedite the operation of attaching the reel to the rod and to afford greater security against the reel becoming accidentally detached therefrom.

A reel-attachment constructed accoring to our former method comprisecl-an externally screwed ferrule secured on the' rod-handle, and a sleeve which was partly screw-threaded to work on the screwed ferrule and partly formed as a thimble to embrace the reel-plate. The sleeve, upon being screwed along the ferrule,ultimatelv-engaged the thicker portion of the back or reel-plate and gripped it against the rod-handle.

According to our improved method of construction, the device consists of two main parts as before, namely, an externally screwed ferrule and an internallyq screwed sleeve working thereon ; but instead of the ferrule being fast upon the rod-handle, both parts are capable ofslid- ing longitudinally thereon. Under such conditions, the fitting constituting the"grip"may be slid bodily towards the thicker part of the back-plate of the reel until it engages therewith. Very little turning of the sleeve upon the ferrule is then necessary in order to tighten the attachment and firmly secure the reel.

Such a grip fitting may, if desired, be applied to each end of the reel back-plate, thereby enabling the position of the reel upon the rod-butt to be somewhat varied.

In applying the grip fitting to the reel, one end of the back-plate is entered in the usual manner in a socket secured to the rod-handle. The bi-part grip fitting is then slid along the handle towards the other end of the back-plate and until it arrives in full engagement with the thicker portion thereof. In the course of this movement,a thinned portion of the ferrule, at which portion the screw thread is cut away, passes behind the end of the back-plate until the position for gripping is reached. In the opposite sides of the screw threaded portion of the ferrule, two longitudinal saw-cuts are made, so that, upon the outer sleeve being rotated and thereby tightened, the inner-ferrule is not only contracted, but a portion of it is gripped between the reel-plate and the rod-handle, the pressure thus created being applied to two opposite sides of the rod-handle. The interior of the sleeve is only screw-threaded in the outer portion of its length, the inner part being plain, and partly recessed to enable the grip fitting to reach its position upon the backplate quickly, and to facilitate its axialmovementduring the tightening of thef astening.

COMPLETE SPECIFICATION.

Improved Means for Attaching Reels to Fishing Rods.

We, JOHN JAMES EARDY, of British nationality, and HARDYBROTHEBS (ALN- WICE), LIMITED, a British company, all ofAlnwick, in the County of

Northumberland, Fishing-rod and Tackle

Manufacturers, do hereby declare the

nature of this invention and in what

manner the same is to be performed, to

be particularly described and ascertained

in and by thefollowing, statement :-

This invention relates to improved

means for attaching reels to fishing-rods ;such means being-designed to expedite the

application of the reel and toabord

greater securityagainst itR accidental

detachment.

In the accompanyingdrawings, Fig. 1

is a side elevation, illustrating my

improvedreel-attachment, and Fig. 2 is a

corresponding vertical section ; Fig. 3

being a transverse section, taken through

the outer sleeve hereinafter referred to,

whilst Fig. 4 is a sideelevation illustrat-

in detached, the inner ferrule also

hereinafter described.

According to our, improved method of

construction,. the device consists of two mainpartsnamely,.-anexternally

screwed-ferrule a and an. internally

screwed sleeve, & -working. thereon ; but

instead of the ferrule a being fast uponthe rod-handle-c as hitherto-both parts

arecapable of-sliding, longitudinally

thereon. conditions, the fiting,. constituting the " grip ", may be

slid bodily towards the thickerpart-of

thebac-. plate dof.. the reel until. it engagestherewith. : Very little turning of

<RTI thesleeve..upontheferruleais then

neeessaryin order totighten the attac ment and firmly secure the reel.

Iii applying the grip-fitting to the reel,

one--end of theback-plate. is entered in

the usualmannes in a soclket e secured to

ther6d-handle. The'bi-part grip-fitting

is then. slipalong. the handle towards the

other end of the back-plate until it arrives

in fullengagement with the thicker por-

tionthereof. Inthe course. of. tliis move

ment, athinned portion a. of the ferrule

a,. at which, portion the screw thread, is

cut away, passes behind the end of. the bu ;-. plate a until~the position for grip-

ping is reached. In. the opposite sides of

thescrew-threaded portion of the ferrule

a, two longitudinal saw-cuts a are made,

so that, upon the outer sleeveb being rotated, and. thereby tightenedthe inner

ferrule.i & '.Qtonly..contracted, but a

portion of it is gripped. between. the reel

plate and the rod-handle; the pressure

thus created being applied to two opposite

sides of the rod-handle. In the outer portion of the threaded part of the sleeve

b, the threads are cut away to a certain

depth, and the middle portion thereof is

formed as a cylindrical recess to enable the grip-fitting to reach its position upon the back-plate quickly, and to facilitate its axial movement during the tightening of the fastening.

It will be apparent that, instead of employing a fixed socket, such as e, for the reception of one arm of theback- plate, the fitting hereinbefore described may be duplicated and applied to the respective arms of the back-plate ; in which case, the position of the reel upon the rod may be varied eitherlongitudi- nally or-angiilarly.
