PROVISIONAL SPECIFICATION.

Improvements in or relating to String and like Holders.

I, ALFRiED WALKER (British Nationality), of 217, Scotland Road, Liverpool, in the County of Lancatter, do hereby declare the nature of this invention to be as follows:This invention reiates to holders for reels, bobbins, spools, and equivalent members on which string, cotton, thread, rope, tape, wire and the like, is wound, and has for its object to provide a new or improved form of holder of this kind by the aid of which a reel or spool may be held or supported in such manner that any required length of the material may 1.5 be readily pulled off or otherwise disconnected from the reel or spool when desired, and so that there is no tendency of continued unwinding of the string or thread when a piece of required length is pulled from the reel. My invention is, however, more especially adapted and intended for the use of packers, needleworkers, and others frequently using a quantity of string or thread which is wound upon a reel or spool suspended in any convenient position and is unwound from the reel in required lengths, or continuously, by p-lling its free end, the ree4 itself being held against rotation during unwinding by the holder.

A string or like holder, according to my invention, is preferably made from a single piece or strip of spring wire which is so bent or shaped as to provide a vertical arm or limb coiled at its upper end and associated by a horizontal or substantially horizontal portion leading from the coil with a second depending arm or limb, the arrangement, disposition and configuration of the respective limbs being such that when a reel or spool of string or thread is applied to the holder the first mentioned limb thereof extends through the central passage of 4&5 the reel or spool and frictionally grips the wall of said passage, whilst the second mentioned limb of the holder is pressed inwardly against the wound string or thread of the reel or spool under the spring influence of the coil and so acts to stay and prevent farther unwinding of the string or thread from the reel immediately the pull on the free end of [Price 1/-I the string or thread is released; the coil for imparting the necessary springiness 55 to the outer limb of the holder also conveniently serves for the attachment of suitable fastening means whereby the holder may be suspended or otherwise retained in required position of use.. 60 In carrying out my invention, according to one convenient mode of embodiment, the arm or limb which is adapted to enter -the central passage of a reel or spool is of curved or bow shape so that 65 it will engage and frictionally operate against diametrically opposed wall portions of the reel passage, whilst the lower end of said limb is also bent or curved or otherwise suitably looped so 70 that it will extend laterally below the lower end of the reel and definitely prevent detachment of the latter from the holder until its limb is moved inwardly by hand to permit such curled or looped 75 end thereof to enter the reel passage.

The upper end of said limb is also provided with a spring loop or coil of two or more convolutions, the wire being coiled in such manner that the spring 80 loop is disposed immediately above the reel passage to provide a centrally disposed holder anchorage. The outer depending limb of the holder preferably extends downwardly at a slight inward 85 inclination and can be curved outwardly somewhat at its lower end, and the lateral wire portion of the holder joining the upper end of the outer limb with the central spring loop or coil may extend at a slight downward inclination towards the loop.

The spring loop or coil may, if so -desired, be constructed at any other point of the wire holder, for example, at the 95 point of junction of the outer limb with the lateral arm or at an intermediate position of either of the respective limbs, the inner limb, if coiled, being made flat since the coil serves to grip the wall iOQ of the reel passage. Any desired number of spring coils may be formed on the holder according to its particular purpose and use, or, alternatively, no coil springs need be used, the required tension being ioobtained by the inherent spring of the wire itself.

In some cases, the outer limb may carry a suitable tab or be formed of a strip or piece of plate metal, such tab or strip being conveniently provided to bear a suitable name, advertisement, or notice; or the outer limb of the holder may be attached to or otherwise associated with a ring or band or a sheath or casingr adapted to encircle or accommodate a reel or spool and likewise bear suitable to advertisement or identification markings.

Dated this 14th day of June, 1932.

COMPLETE SPECIFICATION.

Improvements in or relating to String and like Eolders.

I, ALFRED WALKER (British Nationality), of 217, Scotland Road, Liverpool, in the County of Lancaster, do hereby declare the nature of this invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, to be particularly described and ascertained in and by the following statement:This invention relates to holders for reels, bobbins, spools, and the like, on which string, cotton, thread, rope, tape, wire, and the like, is wound, and has for its object to provide a new or improved form of holder of this kind by the aid of which a reel or spool may be held or supported in such manner that any required length of string, or the like, may be readily pulled off or otherwise disconnected from the reel or spool as and when desired. My invention, however, is more especially adapted and intended for the use of packers, needleworkers, and other frequently using a quantity of string or thread which is unwound from a reel in required lengths or continuously, and this without rotation of the reel itself which is held by the holder against such movement during the unwinding.

It has been proposed to provide a string holder of the above kind made of a single strip of wire and having a scotching arm consisting of two parallel limbs joined integrally by a loop at their lower ends and associated at their upper ends by horizontal members with the coiled upper ends of a pair of vertical arms which, when engaged in a reel passage, spring apart and by means of projections on their lower ends support the reel so that the scotching arm presses lightly against the reel edge by spring pressure.

According to my invention, I provide a stringi, thread, or like holder also made froin a single -piece or strip of spring wire of a suitable gauge, or other suitable -spring metal, and which is so shaped or bent as to create a single depending arm or linib adapted to extend through and frictionally engage the wall of a reel passage and provided at its lower end with suitable means adapted to prevent inadvertent disconnection of the reel from said arm or limb, and a further single arm or limb adapted to extend 65 over and press inwardly against the womud string or thread, or the like, of the reel for the purpose of staying anid preventing continued unwinding of t)i e string, thread, or the like, immediately the pull or tension on1 the same is released.

In a preferred construction of the invention, the holder is made from spring Wire and embodies a curved or bowed arm 75 or limb curled over or otherwise bent or shaped at its lower end to provide a stop for engaging the adjacent end o: a reel when positioned on the holder, and an inclined arm or limb extending inwardly 80 towards said stop and associated at its upper end by a lateral or horizontal portion of the wire with a spring coil located at the upper end of said bowed lintb, such spring coil being provided to 85 impart the necessary springyness to said inclined limb of the holder. One or more spriag.coils may be provided on any convenient part or parts of the holder as desired, and the spring coil 90 referred to may conveniently serve for the attachment of suitable fastening means whereby the holder can be suspended or otherwise retained in required position of use.

I will further describe my invention with the aid of the accompanying sheet of exp'anatory drawings which illustrate.

by way of example only. one mode of carrying the same into effect. 100 In said drawings:Fig. 1 is a view of a string or thread holder constructed in accordance with the invention, and Fig. 2 shows the same in use applied to a reel or spool of 105 twine.

Fig. 3 illustrates the manner in which the holder grips and operates upon said reel or spool.

The holder, as shown, is made from a single piece or strip of spring wire a of 110 a suitable gauge which is bent or shaped in any convenient manner to provide a 40)1,037 401,031 depending arm or limb b coiled at its upper end at c and associated by a lateral portion j leading from said coil c with a second depending arm or limb e.

Said inner arm or limb b is adapted to enter the central passage /1 of a reel or spool of twine -f and is of appropriately curved or bowed formation so that it will engage and frictionally operate against diametrically opposed wall portions of said reel passage /1, whilst the lower end of said limb b is a'so bent or curled upon itself so that it will extend as a stop q laterally below the lower edge of the reel core and definitely prevent detachment of the reel from the holder until its limb b is moved inwardly by hand sufficiently to permit the entrance of such curled or hooked stop g thereof into the reel passage /1. The upper end of said inner limb b is also conveniently provided with a spring loop or coil c of one, two, as shown, or more convolutions, the wire a being coiled in such manner the said spring loop is located immediately above the reel passage f to provide a centrally disposed holder anchorage. The outer depending limb e, of the holder extends downwardly at a slight inward inclination, and may be curved outwardly at its lower end, whilst the lateral portion d of the holder extends at a slight upward inclination towards the spring loop c when the parts are in their inormal positions and the holder is disconnected from the twine reel f.

It will be seen therefore that when the holder is applied to reel f pieces of twine of any desired length may be readily un4,0 wound and detached from the reel, the latter being rotated by imposition of a slight pull or tension on the twine, and that the motion of the reel is arrested by the spring pressure of the outer limb e upon the twine of the reel acting under the influence of the spring loop c immerliately a length of twine is separated from the reel. Moreover the stop g is formed with an appropriately chamfered or in5c clined extremity g' which enhances the gripping action of the holder upon the lower end of the reel core as the tension on the twine, during unwinding, is increased.

The twine holder is conveniently held in required position of use by means of a cord, chain, or other flexible connector secured to the spring coil c which, as before stated, is situated immediately above the reel passage fl and thus provides a centrally disposed anchorage for the holder.

The spring loop or coil c may, if so desired, be constructed at any other point of the twine holder, for example, at the point of junction of the outer limb e with the lateral arm cl or at an intermediate position of either or both of the respective limbs e, b, the inner limb b, if coiled, being made fiat-i.e. without curvature- 7(& since the coil itself may serve to grip the wall of the reel passage /1. Any desired number of spring coils c may be formed on the holder according to its particular purpose and use, or, alternatively, no 75spring coil need be used, the required pressure of the outer limb e upon the reel or spool f be.ing attained by the inherent springiness of the wire a itself.

In some cases, the outer limb e of the 80Q holder-which -may be formed of a strip or piece of plate metal-may carry a suitable tab, such tab or strip being conveniently provided to bear a suitable name, advertisement, or notice; or said 85.

outer limb may be attached to or otherwise associated with a ring or band or a sheath or casing adapted to encircle or accommodate the reel or spool / and likewise bear suitable advertisement or 9g identification marking or markings.

Eaving now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what 1 claim 95.

A strimig. thread, or like holder made from a single piece or strip of spring wire or other vuitable spring metal which is so shaped or bent as to i00t create a single depending arm or limb adapted to extend through and frictionally engage the wall of a reel passage and provided at its lower end with suitable means adapted to prevent inadvertent disconnection of the reel from said arm or limb, and a further single arm or limb adapted to extend over and press inwardly against the wound string or thread, or the like, of the reel, for the 110 purpose specified.

2. A string, thread, or like holder made from a piece or strip of spring wire which is so bent or shaped as to provide a single depending inner arm or limb 115coiled at its upper end and associated by a horizontal or substantially horizontal portion leading from said coil with a further single depending outer arm or limb, the arrangement, disposition and 120 configuration of the pair of arms or limbs being such that when the holder is applied to a reel or spool of thread, or the like, said inner limb extends through a passage of the reel and frictionally 125.
