A high performance solar control glass comprises a glass substrate with a coating comprising a heat absorbing layer and a low emissivity layer of a metal oxide. Preferred heat absorbing layers absorb preferentially at wavelengths above 700 nm, and may be, for example, of non-stoichiometric or doped tungsten oxide, or of cobalt oxide, chromium oxide, iron oxide or vanadiam oxide.
