Quaternary ammonium salts of certain phenylpropylamines and phenylbutylamines are useful antiarrhythmic drugs. A method for treating arrhythmia and prolonging the action potential of cardiac tissue is provided. Pharmaceutical formulations containing such quaternary ammonium salts are disclosed.
A method of treating pain of whatever origin and nature in human and animal which comprises administering to the patient in need an effective amount of a polypeptide of structure: ##STR1## wherein X is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, t-butyloxycarbonyl(Boc), Asp, Pyr-Glu, Pyr-Gln-Asp, Pyr-Asn-Asp; Y is selected from the group consisting of Thr, Met, Leu, Nle, Val; W is selected from the group consisting of Met, Nle, Leu.
An article for dispensing drugs is disclosed which is formed from a crystalline polymeric material having a melting point of at least about 100.degree. C. and a drug. The drug is dispersed throughout the polymer and the combination is formed into a solid shape having structural integrity.

Apparatus for administering intravenously a drug supplied initially in powdery form, in particular cytotoxic drugs, said apparatus comprising a sealed container for the drug, an infusion set supplying a drip feed of intravenous liquid to the patient and also being in communication with the interior of said sealed container, and a piston-cylinder pump assembly also in communication with the interior of said container in such a manner that appropriate actuation of the pump assembly can first of al...
Apparatus for administering drugs to animals is provided comprised of bow means for propelling an arrow, an arrow having drug dispensing means attached to the forward end thereof and a reel having a length of cord wound thereon attached to the bow means. The free end of the cord is attached to the arrow whereby the arrow can be retrieved after being propelled by reeling in the cord.
An improved method for the topical administration of systemically or locally active drugs utilizes a bandage containing one or more layers including a drug useful in the treatment of disease and a heat-generating substance, each dispersed intimately throughout said bandage layers.
Cells are transfected with a construct containing transcriptional promoter element(s) that have been implicated in carcinogenesis or inflammation ligated to a reporter gene. Determination of inhibition of activation of said promoter element(s) by putative agent indicates the agent is a candidate as a drug or source of a drug for prophylaxis or treatment of cancer or inflammation. The method has particular application to screening agents as candidates for drugs or sources of drugs for prophylaxis...
A method for treating schizophrenia and a method and composition for potentiating the beneficial effects and reducing the side effects of neuroleptic drugs. Schizophrenia is treated with a GABA-like compound such as Lioresal. Neuroleptic drugs are potentiated by coadministering to a schizophrenic a neuroleptic drug and a GABA-like drug such as Lioresal.
Effectiveness on cellular processes of a drug or antibiotic introduced into isotonic sucrose solution of 0.005 Normal sodium chloride containing physiological cells in suspension is determined by irradiating the solution, situated in an electric field, with a laser beam and measuring frequency difference between incident light and light scattered by cell motion in the electric field.
