A process for providing a thermal insulating cover of discrete particles for a container of fluids involves forming a plurality of hollow interior, discrete, ceramic particles, firing the particles at a temperature of at least 350.degree. C and then covering the heated liquid with at least a 1/8 inch thick layer of the fired particles. A potentially improved ceramic thermal insulating particle is also described and contains a hollow interior with a plurality of partitions.
A first shaft is screwed with a second shaft. The first shaft is secured rotatively to a bearing through a spring and the second shaft is secured slidably to another bearing. A pushing force in a fixed direction is provided to the second shaft through the screwed portion by actuating a spring torque in a rotative direction to the first shaft, whereby a determined tension is given to a chain when a tensioner is slackened in use.
Apparatus for automatically connecting and disconnecting a pair of connectors includes first and second relatively movable means to carry the connectors and to move them back and forth between connected and disconnected positions. Rack and gear means may be used having a variable mechanical advantage at different positions to facilitate connection and disconnection of the connectors. The apparatus may also have means for providing radiation for antibacterial effect on the connectors, typically u...
A containment reservoir for a liquid, such as petroleum oil, comprising, a walled ground containment space or pit, opening upwardly, with the space containing a liquid impervious flexible liner generally following the contour of the space, and with the liner comprising a layer of pervious fabric material having on at least one of its sides a layer of liquid impervious material, such as rubber, the liner being operable to prevent escape of liquid through the liner from the containment space; mean...
A method of providing a lubrication system for a shaft journaled in a dynamoelectric machine. In this method, the shaft is lubricated with a solid lubricant of a feeder wick member impregnated therewith during at least a part of the run-in operation of the dynamoelectric machine when it is first energized. A mixture of a lubricating oil and the solid lubricant is then created to effect the lubrication of the shaft by passing the lubricating oil from a storage wick material therefor through the f...
A tension providing mechanism including two shafts, one having an external screw and the other having an internal screw, the shafts being connected by engaging the screwed portions with each other. One of the shafts is supported for axial translation without rotation, and the other shaft is supported for rotation and is restrained from axial sliding. The rotatable shaft includes a torsion spring for applying spring torque in a direction to cause the other shaft to extend in an axial direction ag...
Methods are disclosed for providing self-aligned barrier and conductor regions in conductively connected charge-coupled devices.
Apparatus for providing X-rays (11) to an object (12) in air. A lens (13) directs energy (14) from a laser (27) onto a target (15) to produce X-rays (11) of a selected spectrum and intensity. A substantially fluid-tight first enclosure (16) around the target (15) has a pressure therein substantially below atmospheric pressure. An adjacent substantially fluid-tight second enclosure (18) contains helium (24) at about atmospheric pressure. A wall (19) has an opening (20) large enough to permit X-ra...
The provision of hair at selected areas of the human scalp by attaching one or more hairpieces in strip form to a plurality of rings which pass through the scalp at spaced locations in such area and are threaded on an endless suture embedded under the scalp is disclosed. Surgical procedure for embedding the endless suture under the scalp and threading the rings thereon are described. A preferred combination of suture, rings and hairpiece is disclosed.
The invention relates to a device for e.g. connecting two shafts (1,2). It comprises an inner sleeve (3) surrounding both shafts, and two outer sleeves (4,6) surrounding the inner sleeve and one shaft each. The inner sleeve is deformed radially inwards into contact with the shafts when the outer sleeves are pressed axially away from each other, whereby sliding occurs in their respective contacts with the inner sleeve. In order to provide a device which does not require access to the end surfaces...
