A piston assembly (10) of the type for reciprocating in an internal combustion engine. The assembly (10) includes an integral aluminum head (12) and skirt (14). The skirt (14) has an outer surface for engaging a cylinder wall which includes a plurality of pointed ridges (24). The pointed ridges (24) extend annularly about the skirt (14) and are each separated by a valley (26). The ridges (24) and valleys (26) are coated with a fluorocarbon polymer. The piston therefore has an improved wear surfa...
A combustion method enabling reduced NO.sub.x formation wherein fuel and oxidant are separately injected into a combustion zone in a defined velocity relation, combustion gases are aspirated into the oxidant stream prior to intermixture with the fuel, and the fuel is maintained free from contact with oxygen until the intermixture.
A process is described for passivating active forms of finely divided metal particles by mildly oxidizing their surfaces at high temperatures in a rotating kiln.
Transition metal on an inert stable carrier hydrogenation catalysts are stabilized with a coating of a fatty amine and an alkane wherein the fatty amine-alkane coating has a melting point of about 130.degree. C. to about 180.degree. F.
In a multicavity klystron amplifier, the drift-tube bore is larger (46) in proportion to the beam size (10) in the non-interacting space between gaps (28) than its size (22) at the gaps (28). This decreases the spacecharge wavelength so that the overall physical length of the klystron is shortened.
A novel protease product suitable for admixture to washing compositions and exhibiting substantially attenuated allergenic properties is prepared by cultivating strains of Bacillus licheniformis which have been mutated to block their synthesis of protease other than Subtilopeptidase A (subtilisin). The commercial Bacillus licheniformis derived protease products are mixtures of subtilisin and a non-serine protease of lower stability and greater allergenicity than subtilisin.
A beamformer for an array of sonar transducers, or electromagnetic radiating elements, includes mixers for translating the signals received by the transducers to a lower frequency. The beamformer incorporates delay lines operating at a clock rate which is reduced in proportion to the decrease in frequency. Each delay line provides delays to the signals of corresponding ones of the transducers in accordance with the time of arrival of a wavefront of radiation upon the respective transducers. Phas...
A shaft sealing precluding fluid from moving in a direction longitudinally of the shaft. At the same time the shaft sealing allows a motion of the shaft in axial direction, an inclination of the shaft, and may also allow a rotary motion of the shaft relative to its sealing means. The sealing means is a rolling diaphragm including a clamping flange on one end of the rolling wall thereof. There is a difference of pressure to either side of the rolling wall of the diaphragm. Its shaft has a predete...
A connector for reduced insertion force includes one or more U-shaped insulators, each having two portions and a gap between them to receive a printed circuit board. A conductor is held by each insulator so that part of the conductor is free to move between first position in which the conductor extends into the gap and a second position retracted from the first position. In the first position, the conductor can make good electrical connection with a printed circuit board inserted into the gap; i...
A process for supplying insulating materials wherein fibrous insulating material moves in a confined turbulent air stream into which an adhesive is injected. Air under pressure is also injected so that portions of the air are entrapped within the fibrous insulating material. The injection of the adhesive and the air increases the pressure of the confined moving air stream so that the fibrous insulating material expands and fluffs when released to the atmosphere.
