A method of making long ropes of a gelled water-based formed product on a substantially continuous basis by mixing together a thermal-gelling gum and an aqueous product base, filling under pressure a plurality of confining conduits maintained at a temperature below the gelation temperature of the mixture, and controlling the filling of the conduits sequentially to provide a selected static residence time of the mixture in the conduits and to sequentially push the formed product out of the condui...
A rope and method of making the same. The rope is adapted to engage a structural member and comprises a plurality of yarns. At least one of the yarns comprises a first set of first fibers and a second set of fibers. The first and second sets of fibers are combined using a false twisting process such that the second fibers do not extend the length of the rope and the second fibers indirectly bear tension loads on the rope. The first fibers substantially determine load bearing properties of the ro...
A device is attached to the compensating rope sheave assembly in an elevator system to detect rope sway exceeding a certain magnitude. The device includes a switch which is attached to the assembly and a loop which is positioned around the rope. The loop is attached to a movable member of the switch. When the rope sways and contacts the loop, it actuates the switch. The loop can be opened to place it around the rope, and it is made of pliant material to protect the switch and the rope.
An apparatus and method for the non-contact measurement of tensile loading (or tension) in ferromagnetic materials, particularly wire ropes, cables, and strands. The magnetostrictive effect is used to measure wave propagation properties within such materials to determine load forces imposed on the tested material based upon a signature obtained for like materials under like conditions. The apparatus and method contemplate an active measurement application, wherein a transmitting sensor generates...
The present invention relates to a jamming cleat for quickly securing the end of a rope, cable or cord. Such a cleat is disclosed in my U.S. Pat. No. 3,574,900. In that known device one end of a cord is held between the walls of a V-shaped groove and the walls are formed with ridges sloping in such a way that the greater the load on the cord the more securely is the cord held in the groove. In the present invention means are provided whereby the cord may be passed around an object and then both ...
A non-destructive method for evaluating ropes, cables, and strands for flaws and tension is shown. The method permits detecting flaws by recognizing certain vibrational wave amplitude and distribution patterns resulting from striking a test subject with a transverse force. Tension on a test subject is calculated by measuring propagation velocity of the vibrational waves through the test subject. An apparatus is provided which produces vibrational waves in a test subject, measures the amplitude a...
A core for wire rope has a fluted member (1) of polymeric or elastomeric material with symmetrically spaced helical grooves (2) each having the shape of an elliptical arc in cross-section in a plane normal to the core axis. The core may contain a reinforcing member, conductors, or optical fibers.
The present invention concerns a method for growing carbon nanotubes using a catalyst system that preferentially promotes the growth of single- and double-wall carbon nanotubes, rather than larger multi-walled carbon nanotubes. Ropes of the carbon nanotubes are formed that comprise single-wall and/or double-wall carbon nanotubes.
A rope and method of making the same. The rope comprises a plurality of yarns. At least one of the yarns comprises first and second sets of fibers. The first fibers are formed of a first material, and the second set of second fibers at least partly surrounds the first fibers. The second fibers are formed of a second material. The first material defines a set of operating characteristics adapted to bear tension loads on the rope. The second material defines a set of operating characteristics adap...
The device for climbing a pair of ropes (1) includes upper and lower clasps (4,6) for clamping each rope and connecting elements for holding a climber, which include a movable or solid seat (7, 12) or harness (23). Each clasp (4,6) has a housing (21); a yoke (3) in the housing (21) provided with an interior space having beveled inclines widening downward; cotters (10) positioned on opposite sides of the rope (1) in the interior space; rollers (11) arranged movably, but securably, between the cot...
