A sample vessel for carrying a sample and storing same in a high vacuum. The vessel includes a hollow body which is open at one end. A specimen carrier plate is coupled by a translating mechanism so that it can slide in and out of said hollow body through the opening. An O-ring seal is provided to seal the carrier plate to the vessel thereby sealing the specimen carried thereby inside the hollow body which can then be evacuated leaving a high vacuum inside.
Samples of substances from sources of variable temperature and pressure are injected into a stream of fluid carrier, for example in chromatographic analysis, without bringing them into contact with moving parts. A stream of the substance is passed through a restriction to the junction of a vent and an injection limb each containing flow restrictions, and carrier fluid is fed alternatively upstream of those restrictions. By thermostatting the injection limb and appropriately selecting the various...
A sample splitter comprising a housing having a substantially cylindrical rotor chamber having at least one inlet, at least two outlets, and a rotor rotatably received in the rotor chamber, said rotor being subdivided into at least two separate zones wherein each zone communicates with said inlet on rotation of the rotor, and each zone communicates with a different outlet from the other zone.
Sample holder apparatus for use in imaging (X-ray CT/NMR) apparatus is provided. The sample holder may be employed to conduct fluid flow studies on a sample and to measure petrophysical properties of a sample. The sample holder may consist of non-ferromagnetic, nonmetallic components; these components are: an outer tubular member containing end plugs that are restrained from outward movement by end member assemblies (which may be metallic) that releasably engage an engagement means, or raised sh...
A sample divider for fine-grained loose material samples contains - arranged symmetrically below one another - a sample delivery pipe, a divider and collecting vessels for sub-samples provided below the divider. The divider is constructed as a divider cone which has distributed over its base surface sample distribution holes to which a plurality of first sub-sample pipes is connected, below which are arranged a collecting funnel, a second divider cone and below that a plurality of second sub-sam...
To concentrate a material by separating it from a diluting medium, the combination of the material and medium is placed in one of two wells in the bottom of a plastic sample concentrator cell, with each well being closed at its bottom end by a different cellophane membrane in contact with a buffer solution in a different one of two buffer compartments. A buffer solution also connects the combination of material and medium in one well and the cellophane bottom of the other well within the sample ...
A sample injector is described for receiving a sample at atmospheric pressure and injecting it at a high pressure into a chromatographic column, which is convenient to use and which avoids loss of the sample. The device includes a rotor and stator with flat adjacent faces, and a passage in the rotor for receiving a syringe needle that can transfer the sample into an aligned port in the stator, wherein the needle-receiving passage extends parallel to the axis of rotation of the rotor but is offse...

A sample analyzer includes a microscope for alternatively focusing an electromagnetic radiation on the sample to cause ion emission therefrom and visually observing the sample; a mass spectrometer for the mass analysis of the emitted ions; an illuminating device for lighting the sample for the microscopic visual observation thereof; an ion optical system for directing the emitted ions into the mass spectrometer; and a displaceably supported carrier carrying the ion optical system and at least on...
An apparatus is described for withdrawing liquid samples from vials and injecting them into a chromatographic column or other analyzing device, which minimizes wastage, cross contamination, and dilution of the samples, and which can be automated with a minimum of complexity. The apparatus includes a sample loop for receiving a sample, and then delivering the sample by means of an injector valve into the flow stream of a chromatographic column, wherein an outer end of the loop is detachably conne...
